The obelisk is regarded a symbolic center of the entire country and all sorts of celebrations, usually sports related, tend to occur here. Sometimes arranged, sometimes just spontaneous.
What is particularly fascinating is that the square itself is really an ugly place. But in your image with the contrasts, the dusky sky and the scrapers in their occasional color mode it all turns into something nice...
